IMG to US residency: the ECFMG, USMLE and Match route explained

1. ECFMG certification

ECFMG certification verifies that your medical education meets the standard for US graduate training. It requires your medical school to be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, primary-source verification of your credentials, and passing the required USMLE examinations.

2. The USMLE Steps

You'll need to pass Step 1 (now reported pass/fail) and Step 2 CK (scored). Step 2 CK's numerical score carries real weight in residency selection now that Step 1 is pass/fail, so it deserves serious, blueprint-aligned preparation. Step 3 is usually taken later, often during residency.

3. The Match (ERAS + NRMP)

• You assemble and submit your application through ERAS.
• You interview with programs through the fall and winter.
• You and the programs submit ranked preference lists to the NRMP, and the algorithm produces a match in March.
